The Right To Be Ordinary> All people should have the right to be ordinary. When this right is compromised due to illness, disability or caring responsibilities, trying to be ordinary becomes extraordinary or special. People deserve the right to be able to access choice, freedom and opportunities – people deserve the right to be ordinary
What Do You Need To Implement an Outcomes Approach? • Genuine desire to do things differently • Realengagement, inclusion and control(for cared for person & carer)through partnership • Encourage Empowerment cared for person, carer and staff • Deep respect for the person who lives the experience. A recognition and belief in their basic human rights(including the right to be ordinary) • Flexible structures(paradox). • Information & support that permit and encourage choice, freedom and opportunity
What Do You Need To Implement an Outcomes Approach? • Well trained, committed and supported staff • Pathways implications barriers gains • Invest in human relationship skills training> {listening/responding/boundary issues} • Willingness and ability to ‘unlearn’ • DANGER > All change creates chaos, fear and a loss of power which will crave a retreat to past familiar structures! RESIST AT ALL COSTS> If in doubt ‘phone a friend or ask the audience!!
What can sabotage an Outcomes Approach> • Lack of vision and enthusiasm • Poor leadership skills {at all levels} • Untrained, undervalued &unsupported staff • Rules not rights • Compliance notcommitment • Resource drain proving not improving • Lack of human warmth {nobody cares how much you know until they know how much you care!} Roosevelt
