CRCHD: Cancer Health Disparities Research and Diversity Training Opportunities Mary Ann S. Van Duyn, PhD Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities NCI Division of Cancer Biology New Grantee Workshop March 12, 2014
URMs Truly Are Underrepresented in the Cancer Research Workforce Drew, ASBMB Today, Jan 2010.
Why is Diversity Important? • Broadens the research “lens” to include new viewpoints from those from diverse backgrounds • Enhances innovation and creativity in cancer research • Contributes to reducing cancer disparities by more effectively addressing existing disparities within the population • Promotes fairness in the use of public funds for cancer research • Consistent with NIH’s Commitment to Excellence: providing support for talented individuals to explore ideas at the highest level of inquiry
Probability of NIH R01 awards by Race and Ethnicity (FY 2000-FY 2006 ) (N = 83,188)
NCI CRCHD Mission Within CRCHD and Across the NCI Divisions, Offices and Centers • Leads NCI’s efforts in the training of students and investigators from diverse populations in cancer and cancer health disparities (CHD) research • Coordinates and strengthens the NCI cancer research portfolio in basic, clinical, translational and population-based research to reduce cancer health disparities
