MEDA, Business Developmentand theUtilization of Information Technology Presented to mHealth Working Group June 2010
Clear language and communication is vital to the success of any organization; this same rule applies when dealing with IT
Table of Contents MEDA TZ • Maintain: • Expand: • Explore: MEDA worldwide
Situation • Malaria mortality and morbidity
Complication • ITNs new on scene • Clear world health targets set in Abuja, Nigeria in 2000 • Focus is on at-risk groups: Px women and infants & 60% coverage • Limited funds, no distribution Solution: TNVS 2004 Success factor: Clear event for issuance of a voucher From that flowed a distribution sector
Core Business Processes Technology Solutions Maintain: back-end systems… Program Management Data Management • Voucher tracking and security • Voucher statistics • Stakeholder numbers • Voucher scanner • Voucher database • Clinic and retailer database TNVS
Maintain: Here is a representation of our voucher transaction database
Maintain: We maintain a separate database for each of our 4,300 clinics with profile data on each
Expand: Representation of 4,300 government-owned RCH clinics
Maintain: And we maintain a yet another database for each of our 7,000 retailers
Expand: Representation of Hati Punguzo’s 7,000 retail outlets
Maintain: MEDA TZ is approaching its goal of 100% GPS coverage for all TNVS stakeholders
IT baseline allows us to adapt program changes easily Malaria objectives changed from at-risk groups to household coverage (2 nets per HH) and then Universal (all sleeping spaces being covered) Change in objectives made possible, and possibly fueled by, influx of huge sums of donor money GF begins in 2004, Tanzania first grant recipient PMI begins in 2006 Gov’t of TZ decides to “catch up” the coverage of children under five. MEDA and other cooperating NGOs finished the U5CC in May 2010 Distribute 7.2 million nets Next up is Universal Coverage Campaign with 14MM nets Key issue remains: What happens next? If the free net distribution is “catch up,” how do we “keep up?”
Core Business Processes Technology Solutions Scaling up: Technology base allows MEDA TZ to find new ways… Data Dissemination Program Management Data Collection • Vehicle tracking software improves general operations: • Planning TNVS monitoring activities • Driver performance and vehicle safety • LLIN issuing points • Detailed maps can be generated and overlaid with other statistics using various GIS software platforms • ESRI • Google Earth • Handheld GPS units and a vehicle tracking system collect location coordinates for: • Clinics • Retailers • District offices • Villages • Petrol filling stations TNVS U5CC / UCC
Expand: We can then drill down by geography. Here is a region.
Expand: The next step involves appropriating other mapping technologies into the database. Here is our data overlaid on Google Earth.
