ARC Linkage: An Applicants View Associate Professor Mibel Aguilar Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences
Preparing an ARC Linkage Application • My experiences over the last couple of years ……. • 1st time – May 2004 – UK biosensor Co, (unsuccessful) • 2nd time – Nov 2005 – Oz biotech investor rejoinder submitted….. • 3rd time – May 2006 – UK biosensor Co • 4th time – Nov 2006 ?? US instrument Co.
Establishing the Relationship with your Commercial Partner • As with all collaborations - does not happen overnight. • Based on complementary science AND personalities 1st Meeting with: • UK biosensor Co – June 2003 • Oz biotech investor - Mar 2004 • US instrument Co. – Nov 2000
Establishing the Relationship with your Commercial Partner • Introduce the concept of an ARC linkage at “appropriate” time. • eg, when collaboration is consolidating and they are clearly interested in what you have to offer. • They can immediately recognise the benefits of leveraging Govt $$ • Prospect of a Grant provides the means to focus the collaborative project.
Establishing the Relationship with your Commercial Partner • How do know when they are interested and it is worth your time ?? • When the commercial partner • requests a CDA • requests MTA • offers some support to initiate research ($$ or in-kind) • Shows they are serious • And then later shows the ARC they are serious
Establishing the Relationship with your Commercial Partner: MonComm • MonComm’s role is to facilitate relationship • Have helped me • Arrange CDAs / MTAs • Identify/delineate commercial outcomes • Articulate benefits to both Monash & Partner • With negotiations • Budget • Research Agreement
Preparing the Grant: Science • You are the CI, you drive the science. • Similar to Discovery, but overlaid with a commercial partner’s R&D focus. • Project is fundamental research that underpins development of a possible commercial “product”. • Project outcomes are crafted within the commercial framework of your Partner.
Preparing the Grant: Process • You are the CI, you drive the science, and the entire application process. • Give your commercial partner plenty of time to • Agree to $$/in-kind contributions • Draft their sections of the Science • Prepare their documents. • Their Letter of Support is proof of their commitment
Preparing the Grant: Budget • Different to Discovery. • More columns in which you off-set cash and in-kind of partner. • RO is a one-stop shop for advice – • Items that can be listed / not listed • What to off-set against partner contribution • What is reasonable • Interpretation of summary sheets generated by GAMS
Preparing the Grant: Feedback • Always obtain feedback from colleagues for the Science • Always work with the Research Office – Invaluable resource ! • They can advise on eg: • General readability • Balance of the application • Eligibility issues • Budget
