  3. The division and occupation of Germany after WWII was supposed to be temporary. • Soon, Britain, France and the U.S. combined their zones to form West Germany.

  4. Stalin refused to reunite East Germany because he feared a strong, united Germany. • Berlin, the divided German capital, was located in East Germany.

  5. 2. The Berlin Airlift

  6. The Soviet Union blocked the Western Allies' railway and road access to the parts of Berlin under Allied control to force the Western powers to allow the Soviet zone to start supplying Berlin with food and fuel, thereby giving the Soviets control over the entire city.

  7. In response, the West mounted an airlift; for almost a year, supplies were flown into W. Berlin.

  8. This forced Stalin to end the blockade.

  11. Stalin installed a Communist gov’t in East Germany.

  12. He built the Berlin Wall in 1961, separating free West Berlin from communist East Berlin.

  15. In 1949, the U.S., Canada, and nine other nations formed the North Atlantic Treaty Organi-zation (NATO) to protect them-selves from Commu-nism.

  16. In response, Stalin formed the Warsaw Pact, in which Communist nations protected each other from democracy.

  17. Both the U.S. and the Soviet Union participated in an arms race, spending billions in developing new and better weapons.
