  1. VIETNAM FOUNDATION Helping Hands from Australia Tam Nong Rest House

  2. Tam Nong District < Dong Thap Province

  3. This is a very low area of the Mekong delta. It is subjected to annual flooding which may last for 6 months. In some areas the food water can be 3 m high. Due to flooding, economic production is very low Many people have to be re-settled into raised grounds

  4. Tam Nong Hospital was built in the 80s, originally with only 20 beds. It has since been extended and now has 70 beds. This is not large enough to meet the need of the local population

  5. Relatives of the patients normally stay at the hospital to look after their sick relatives Many of the patients arrive at the hospital in small boats

  6. As there are not enough beds even for patients, the relatives of the patients have nowhere to rest. They spend the night at wherever place they can find, such as in corridors, along verandas such as this, in the open etc.

  7. As there is no proper place for resting, many of these carers become sick themselves, putting extra burden on the over-stretched hospital. Thanks to your support, we built a 64-bed rest house so that these carers have somewhere to rest while they stay looking after their sick family members

  8. The rest house is located on the river bank, on reclaimed land

  9. Construction started in September 2006 and completed in December 2006

  10. Back view of the building Front view of the completed building

  11. The building has a total floor area of about 380 m2 consisting of four 8m x 8m bedrooms and a toilet block

  12. on 12 Jan 2007,a delegation of Vietnam Foundation’s members visited the hospital led by Prof Nguyen Thien Tong, our representative in VN, accompanied by Mr Mal Skelly, the Australian Consul General in HCMC.

  13. Mr Mal Skelly cut ribbon to officially open the rest house which was then named ‘Aussie House’

  14. Mr Mal Skelly, the Australian Consul General in HCMC Prof Nguyen Thien Tong, our representative in Vietnam

  15. The delegation inspected the rest house and visited other parts of the hospital

  16. The construction cost of the rest house was VND 388 million (approximately AUD 32000). This was contributed by the Foundation and many of its members and supporters. The major supporter with an AUD 5000 contribution was Pathfinder Solutions Pty Ltd, an Australian marketing consultancy based in Melbourne. The hospital contributed the land reclamation costs. The local population contributed fans, lights and other fittings as well as beds and furniture inside the building.

  17. It is not possible to mention the names of all the people who contributed without risking missing some. Many people also wish to remain anonymous. The Foundation wishes to stress that without your help and support we would not have been able to take on and complete the project. Thank you very much. The Foundation would like to thank members, friends and supporters who have contributed in many ways toward this project; from supporting the previous fund raising dinner, buying raffle tickets to donating cash, goods for auctions, various free services, etc.
