Women Gain the Right to Vote SWBAT: illustrate a poster highlighting the reasons why women should be allowed to vote Homework: Do Now: On Friday we talked about women using the 14th and 15th amendments as justification for having the right to vote. What other arguments do you think they made? Think about a women’s role in the work force and in the home.
Progress moves forward • By the early 1910s, suffragists make small victories using three tactics: • Activism at the local level • Use of bold, new strategies to build enthusiasm • Rebirth of a national movement under Carrie Chapman
Local and Bold Tactics • Local tactics • Used door to door campaigning to reach potential supporters. • Brought suffrage to the attention of poor and working class women. • Went on speaking tours. • Bold tactics • Harassed politicians • Picketed day and night • Led to arrests and jail time
Ultimately this hard work leads to the… • Passage the 19thAmendment!!!!! • Was ratified August, 1920 72 years after women first demanded for the rights in Seneca Falls.
Activity- Decorate Miss L.’s room In groups of 2, you will design a poster that tries to convince the public that women should vote and the reasons why. The poster must be illustrated appropriately and the intent must be clear. You will need to use your notes from both Friday and today. At the end of class you will present your poster to the class. This will be worth 15 points. Questions to consider: What groups were against women gaining the vote? What reasoning did women give for needed the vote? What are women doing in order to get the vote?
“Bad Romance” video • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYQhRCs9IHM • What argument do the women in the song give for suffrage? • What happened to the women who picketed? • What did the note say that the male politician had in his pocket?
