Components of Application • MCAT • 30 out of 45 to be competitive • http://www.aamc.org/students/mcat/start.htm • AMCAS application • Personal statement • http://www.aamc.org/students/amcas/ • Class requirements (school dependant) • 2 semesters of biology with labs2 semesters of physics with labs2 semesters of English2 semesters of mathematics2 semesters of general chemistry with labs2 semesters of organic chemistry with labs • Courses at Radford University that meet the above minimum requirements include: Biology: BIOL 132, 231Physics: PHYS 111, 112 or calculus based: PHYS 221, 222English: CORE 101, 102Math: any math course, we recommend MATH 138 or higherGeneral Chemistry: CHEM 101, 102Organic Chemistry: CHEM 301, 302 • Clinical Experience • 100 Hours (roughly 16 hours / semester, including summers which = roughly 1 hour per week) • Extracurricular activities / leadership roles • Evaluation from Pre-Med Advising Committee • http://www.radford.edu/~prehealth/medicine.htm

  6. First Year/ Fall • Make sure you’re taking and scheduled requirements for medical school • Make a personal medical school application timeline • Focus on getting excellent grades and making contact with professors in science classes • Visit with Pre-med advisor

  7. First year/ Spring • Visit with the pre-med advisor to make sure you’re still on track • Focus on academic record • Possibly find out about research opportunities, summer opportunities • Find clinical experience in the local community

  8. First year / Summer • Begin clinical experience • Study general chemistry/biology/physics for MCAT’S

  9. Second year / Fall • Meet with pre-med advisor • Keep taking and excelling in medical school requirements • Choose good electives to make you’re a well-rounded student ie: sociology, psychology, art, foreign language • Get involved on campus • Research summer internships and apply where necessary (at least 4) • Volunteer in community • Clinical experience

  10. Second year / Spring • Meet with pre-med advisor • secure summer internship / shadowing plans • Continue to excel in classes • Stay involved, possibly taking leadership roles, on campus • Clinical experience
