General Assembly’s leadership and committee system • President of Senate is the Lt. Governor • The Speaker protemp is elected by the majority party and can fill in for the Lt. governor if the Lt. governor can no longer do his duties. • The speaker of the house is elected by the majority party • The speaker protemp is elected by the majority party and can fill in for the speaker if the speaker can no longer do his duties.
How a bill becomes law • Bill introduced • Reviewed in committee • Voted on in legislative house that it was introduced in • Voted on in other legislative house • If passed through both then it goes to the governor • Governor can sign bill, veto bill or just let it pass
Georgia’s governor and Lt. Governor qualifications • 30 years old • Legal resident of Georgia for 6 years • 15 years of United States citizenship • Governor can run 2 terms then they have to take a 4 year waiting period • Lt Governor can run unlimited terms • Both run 4 year terms and next governor will be elected in 2014 but the next Lt governor election will be in 2012
Organization of executive branch • Over 40 major executive departments • Appointed by the governor • Has formal and informal powers • Formal powers were given to him by the constitution • Informal powers were passed down
Structure of court system • Appellate courts • 1. Supreme Courts- highest ranking court • 2. Court of Appeals- cases appealed in lower courts • 3. Superior courts- 159 courts, general • Trial courts • 1. state courts- 70 courts, misdemeanors, felonies • 2. juvenile courts- 159 courts, general • 3. superior courts- 159 courts, general • 4. probate courts- 159 courts, wills, estates, guardians, • 5. magistrate courts- 159 courts, criminal • 6. municipal courts- 400 courts, lowest ranking court system
How are the judges selected • Most Judges are elected while • Juvenile judges are appointed
Criminal Law • It involves criminals that are being charged with a crime. • If someone were to break the law they would be tried as a criminal • The more serious crimes are called felonies
Civil Law • It is used to settle disputes with two or more parties
History of Juvenile court system • The juvenile court system was created so juveniles would not be imprisoned and tried the same as adults • It was created in 19th century when the treatment of children was decided to improve • It was created in 1899.
Adult arrest process • In the Adult process you are arrested with the charges that you are being charged of. • The police and the District Attorney take you to a grand jury to see if they have a case to stand trial • If they say you do have a case then you go to trial court then if you are convicted then you go to jail.
Juvenile Arrest Process • 1. into custody • 2.intake decision by intake officer • You either go home, get a warning or have a formal hearing • 3. Formal hearing, plead guilty or trial • 4. trial • After trial you either go home, probation, or detention center
Way to settle disputes in a delightful manor • We can settle problems in a peaceful manor just by hanging around the right crowds and just by minding your own business • If there isn’t trouble there is no reason to start some

Analyze the role of the judicial branch in Georgia state government • *Explain the structure of the court system in Georgia • *Explain how judges are selected • *Compare and contrast criminal law and civil law • 5.) Analyze the role of the juvenile justice system in Georgia • *Describe the history of the juvenile justice system • *Compare the juvenile justice system to the adult system emphasizing different jurisdictions, terminology, steps in the criminal justice process, and the rights of the juveniles when taken into custody. • *Design ways to avoid trouble and settle disputes peacefully
