  5. Converting Measurements When converting from one unit to another in either the metric or the customary system, it is important to know when to multiply and when to divide. multiply or divide??

  6. Multiplying! When you convert from a larger unit to a smaller unit, multiply! Example: How many inches are in 2 feet? We need to go from what unit to what other unit? Which is bigger, an inch or a foot? Since we’re going from a larger unit (feet) to a smaller unit (inches), multiply! How many inches are in 1 foot? 2 feet x 12 inches = 24 inches

  7. Dividing! When you convert from a smaller unit to a larger unit, divide! Example: How many yards are in 9 feet? We are going from what unit to what unit? Which is larger, a foot or a yard? Since we’re going from a smaller unit (feet) to a larger unit (yard), divide! How many feet are in one yard? 9 ft ÷ 3 ft = 3 yds

  8. Something to remember!!! From larger unit to smaller unit means multiply! From smaller unit to larger unit means divide!
