Comparative and Superlative in German Basic Rules All German adjectives form the comparative by adding an er to the end of the root adjective. schnell = schneller 2) If the adjective is 1 syllable long, and has an A, O or U, then these adjectives get umlauts. lang = länger / stark = stärker 3) There are two ways to form the superlative in German. schnellste / am schnellsten 4) If the adjective ends in a T, D, SS or EU, then you add an extra E before sten or ste. kalt = kälteste (am kältesten / nett = netteste (am nettesten)
