Workshop on Teaching Introductory Statistics Sessions 6 & 7: Using Technology in the Classroom, Parts I & II Roger Woodard, North Carolina State University Ginger Holmes Rowell, Middle Tennessee State University Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee July 10-13, 2006
GAISE: Use Technology For Developing Concepts & Analyzing Data • Not to be used for the sake of using technology • Allows students to focus on interpretation, not mechanics • Helps students analyze data, visualize concepts, and understand abstract ideas • Examples Include: • Computer software, graphing calculators, applets, websites, response systems, etc.
Using Technology • To help avoid using technology just to use technology consider the Triadic Approach to Technology Assessment Activity Technology Outcome Flashlight Project, The TLT Group,http://www.tltgroup.org/media/fl/Triad.htm
Desired Outcome Visualize shape of binomial distribution for different values of n and p. Recognize convergence of relative frequency to distribution function. Select Activity Simulate a binomial experiment 10, 100 & 1000 times. Vary n and p. Select Technology 10 Simulations – Low Tech 1000 Simulations – High Tech (Computer Simulation) An Example: Using Technology
Using Technology Sessions • Outline • Part I: Analyze Data • Demo statistical software • Time for project work • Part II: Conceptual Understanding • Visualization through simulation • Software, Calculator, Applets
Technologies for Analysis • Statistical Software Packages • Internet-based (Java) Analysis Tools • StatCrunch (www.statcrunch.com) • Others • Graphing Calculators • Computer Response Systems • “Clickers” • TI Navigator
Statistical Software Packages • Lots of choices – even for intro stat Look for • Easy to use – intuitive interface • Helps students focus on concepts and interpretation • Good price (i.e. student versions) • Encourage students to • Learn how to use the help menus and • Figure out some things on their own
Don’t Forget About • Using technology to create reports of their analysis • Importing graphs into Word/PowerPoint • Exposure to “standards” for writing in their discipline • When grading reports, develop a rubric • Encourages better reports • Important for grading • Helps students know what is important
Technology for Analysis • Demonstrations • Fathom • StatCrunch • Some links • Statistical Tests fonsq3.let.uva.nl/Service/Statistics.html • VassarStat faculty.vasser.edu/lowry/VassarStats.html • Statistics Online Computational Resource Socr.stat.ucla.edu/htmls/SOCR_Analyses.html • Statistical Calculators calculators.stat.ucla.edu
Its Your Turn • What are appropriate ways to incorporate technology into the activity that you are developing? • Spend time working on this with your group.
