Internet Map Server Help This presentation briefly describes the Internet map server viewer and model interface and how to work them.
Internet Map Server • The Map Server makes extensive use of HTML, Javascript, and Cookies to make the application run. • You must have Javascript and Cookies enabled to view this site correctly. • This site is optimized for Internet Explorer 5 or later. Use Netscape Navigator at your own risk… • The Mapserver makes use of freely available opensource software • Univ. of Minnesota Internet Mapserver • GRASS http://mistral.coas.oregonstate.edu/forages/mapserv4
The viewer consists of: Toolbar Where you select the tools to manipulate the map image Map Display Where the map image is displayed Layer Controls Where you select what layers will appear on the map and where the legend appears Legend Display For the color categories of raster layers Overview Reference map Shows a larger scale reference for the map display The Map Viewer
Toolbar Back Zoom In Zoom Out Full Extent Pan View Identify
Zoom In Back • Zoom In: Zooms in to the area of the map that you click or drag a box around.Clicking on a single point will center and zoom the window to that point. Click and drag the mouse to define a box to the region you want to zoom to. Zoom In
Zoom Out Back • Zoom Out: Zooms out Zoom In
Full Extent Back • Zoom to Full Extent: Zooms out to the extent of the entire region. Full Extent
View Panning Back • Recenter: Recenters the display to the point that you click the mouse. Pan View
Identify Back • Identify: Displays attribute information for the feature or grid that you clicked. All visible layers in the map display are queried. Identify
Layer Controls Back • There are two general types of layers you can display on the map: features and rasters(grids). Multiple features can be displayed simultaneously but only a single raster image can be displayed at a time. Features can also be overlayed on top of raster layers. Both can be queried using the “Identify” tool. • Features • Cities, geopolitical, rivers, roads, etc. • Rasters • Elevation. DEM grid of terrain elevation. • Soil layers • pH • Salinity (in units of electrical conductivity) • Drainage classification. A subjective measure of soil drainage conditions. • Available water content • Climate layers. These layers are maps generated by the PRISM model. • Mean Precipitation (monthly and annually) • Maximum Temperature (monthly) • Minimum Temperature (monthly) • Only one raster layer can be selected at a time • A colorbar legend will appear to the left of the map Map Features Soil Layers PRISM Layers
Layer Controls • Reference suitability layers • These are grids of previously modeled “read only” species suitability calculations. • Click the Info button to open a window with the model parameters that were used to generate this output. • User-Defined suitability layers • Select this layer when you want to customize the parameterization of the suitability model • Click the Info button to open a window with the model parameters that were used to generate this output. • Click the Calculator button to open the interface for inputs to run the species suitability model • Yield Production layers • These are the layers resulting from the most recent water-balance yield production calculations of the model. • Redraw button • In order to view your selection in the map window, you must click the “Redraw Map” button. Reference Layers User-Defined Layers Yield Production Refresh
Suitability Model Back • The adaptation model is a function of six parameters: • MaxT : July maximum temperature (C) • MinT : January minimum temperature (C) • PPT : Mean Annual Precipitation (mm) • Yield : Yield production from water balance equations(%) • pH : Soil pH • Salt : Soil salinity (ds/m) • Drain : Soil drainage (categorical) • Parameters may be individually included/excluded from the model • Thresholds must be given for each parameter for each adaptation category: Well, Moderate, Marginal • A result of Well, Moderate, Marginal adaptation is returned only if ALL of the included parameters meet the given thresholds.
Yield Production • If Yield production is selected, an additional parameter set is required • Soil available water content (cm of water per meter depth of soil) • If “Auto” is selected, the soil moisture grid is used in the calculation. Otherwise the following two values apply to the entire region: • Field Capacity (cm of water per meter depth of soil) • Wilting Point (cm/m) • Crop factors • Crop co-efficient midpoint (Kc_mid) • Root depth (m) • Yield response factor: The crop yield one might expect under ideal conditions [0-1] • Stress response factor (p) : The average fraction of Total Available Soil Water (TAW) that can be depleted from the root zone before moisture stress occurs [0-1] • Temperature Production Curve • Optimum Temperature • Minimum Temperature • Time Period: The months over which yield production will be averaged to produce a single yield value. • WARNING! Running the yield production model can take nearly two minutes if modeling an entire country.
Adaptation Model • When you first open the model inputs window, the settings in the table will be set to the values that were used to create the data grid, if any (blue text). If no settings were saved, the values will default to the settings for Tall Fescue (gray). • You can include (exclude) parameters in the model by selecting (de-selecting) the checkboxes at the top of the columns. • The model assigns the adaptation level (well, moderate, marginal) only if ALL selected conditions for that class are met. • Unrestricted low (high) values should be set to -9999 (9999). This means there is no lower (upper) bound to the condition. • Unrestricted drainage values should be set to the lowest (highest) drainage level (eg. VPD or ED). • To “eliminate” an adaptation level, set two classification levels to have the same low/high thresholds (e.g. Setting moderate and marginal levels of salinity to the same values means that only well, moderate, and not-adapted levels will be used).
Adaptation Model • By default, the model only runs over the region visible in the browser window. Select “Entire Country” when you want to extend the modeling everywhere. • If you want the model run to be saved in a different “version” in the Layer Controls list, select a different “Version” number before you click on the Run button. • Click Save to save a short description of the run that will appear in the Layer Controls of the Map Viewer. This will also save the values and settings of the window into a Cookie on your computer that you can later recall. You should do this only AFTER you have Run the model and want to retain the results for later or for someone else to examine. • Click Load to recall the settings (if any) that have been saved to your computer. This only works on the same computer that you ran the model from. Otherwise, defaults are loaded. • Click Defaults to load the settings for Tall Fescue.
