The Problem • We are the ticket sales directors here at Hsieh Factor, a hit new T.V. show. We sell tickets both upfront at the event(x) and online before the event(y). We would like to know how each of them are doing. The total ticket sales where 14,444 and the difference between upfront and online were 1932. how many tickets of each were sold?
Equations To find the two equations first find all the numbers. The key numbers in this problem are, 14,444 and 1932. put these in eqaution form. Because in the problem 14444 is a total you add x and y. x + y=14444. the other one is a difference, so you subtract x and y. x – y=1932. • X + Y = 144444 • X - Y = 1932
Elimination • X+Y=14,444 • X-Y=1,932 Add the two equations! 2x +0=16376 2 2 x=8188. PLUG IN X. 8188 + y = 14444 y=6256
Substitution • X+Y=14,444 • X-Y=1,932 • X=1932+Y • (1932+Y)+Y =14444 • 1932+2y=14444 • -1932 -1932 • 2y=12512 • 2 2 • Y=6256
The Results • Upfront Ticket sales(x) = 8188 • Online ticket sales(y) = 6256
