Contents • Introduction to engaging with Key Stakeholders • Why is it so important? • Potential Obstacles • The 7 Steps to Success • How have these steps influenced the SHARP Partnership
Introduction to engaging with Key Stakeholders • Engagement is VITAL to the success of the SHARP project • Key stakeholders at a variety of levels • The SHARP project has identified 3 key groups: • 1. National/ Regional Policy-makers • 2. Transnational/ European policy-makers • 3. Urban development and spatial planners
Why is it so important? • We want SHARP to have an influence on future policy and development. • Engagement forges links and develops relationships. • An opportunity for SHARP to influence the decision making process.
Potential Obstacles 1. Difficult to get in contact with, or unavailable 2. Unaware or uninterested in issues relating to groundwater 3. Do not understand groundwater issues 4. Do not follow up conversation
The 7 Steps to Success To engage with policy makers on groundwater related issues, IRRI propose that all partners take the following 7 steps... • Regulatory planning and policy frameworks • Identify the key decision-makers • Make contact with key personnel
The 7 Steps to Success 4. Explore decision-maker and planner’s views 5. Understand mechanisms for change 6. The importance of coordination- explain this to the stakeholders. 7. Ask to be included in all future discussions
How have these steps influenced the SHARP project? • SHARP partners have already had positive results from following the 7 steps • Contact made with developers, policy-makers and land managers • Follow up meetings arranged to involve SHARP in future planning • Strengthening the legacy of the SHARP project
