We will be measuring levels of physical activity 2m people more active by 2012 • Health Survey for England • Active People • Moving people from 0 x 30 • Increasing the prevalence of 5 x 30
Just how active should we be? Children and young people Adults including older people 7 x 60 60 minutes of moderate intensity activity each day. At least twice a week this should include activities to improve bone health, muscle strength and flexibility 5 x 30 30 minutes a day of moderate intensity activity on 5 or more days of the week.
Just for geeks….. 150 minutes per week is what matters Accumulate in units of no less than 10 minutes Don’t forget ‘vigorous’ activity A mixture of vigorous and moderate is fine To maintain a healthy weight: Walk at 4mph for 150 mins per week, or Jog/power walk at 6mph for 75 mins To achieve a healthy weight: 4mph for 75 mins per day, or 3mph for 70 mins, or 6mph for 22 mins Balanced diet
Just for geeks….. To prevent re-gain: 4mph for 60 mins per day, or 6mph for 30 mins Beware long bouts of inactivity, irrespective of whether you are active at recommended levels
What you can do Providers • Get more familiar with Be Active, Be Healthy and watch out for the rollout of the national initiatives • Use change4life messaging & the sub-brands • Follow the NICE guidelines for Physical Activity (Environment, Workplace, Children) • Make use of the Promoting Activity Toolkit • Be clear about your outcomes and record them Commissioners • Use the cost of inactivity, and the new tools announced in Be Active, Be Healthy, to drive up investment • Build on the existing Local Area Agreement • Follow the NICE guidelines for Physical Activity (Environment, Workplace, Children) • Be realistic about the outcomes you are expecting
