Diction • An author’s choice of words • Choice of use and words in speech or writing • The style of speaking or writing as dependent upon choice of words
Imagery • metaphors and similes: the figurative language, especially metaphors and similes, used in poetry, plays, and other literary works • mental images: a set of mental pictures produced by the memory or imagination or conjured up by a stimulus • images in artistic work: the pictorial images found in works of art such as paintings and sculptures, or the art or process of making such images
Detail • In composition, a particular item of information that supports an idea or contributes to an overall impression, in an essay, report, or literary work. • Carefully chosen pieces of information that are well organized and help make a piece of writing more precise, vivid, convincing, and interesting.
Tone • encompasses the attitude toward the subject and toward the audience • it may be formal, informal, intimate, solemn, etc. • Each piece of literature has at least one theme, or central question about a topic, and how the theme is approached in the work is considered tone.
Syntax • the organization of words in sentences • the ordering of and relationship between the words and other structural elements in phrases and sentences • an explanation of, or set of rules for, producing grammatical structures according to the ‘syntax’ of language
In conclusion… • These five elements work together to create voice in a piece of writing. • In order for the piece to be compelling, all five must take an equal part
