  10. INTRODUCTION & HISTORY "Egypt," wrote Greek historian Herodotus 2,500 years ago, "is the gift of the Nile." Without the river Egypt would be little more than a desert. It has remained a unified state for over 5,000 years. Egypt's people take pride in their descent from what they consider humankind's earliest civilization. The Arabic word for Egypt is Misr, meaning "to civilize." In about 3100 B.C., the ruler Mena united the country and began the 30 pharaonic dynasties that comprise its history. Strong concepts of spirit life and immortality dominate Egyptian religion. The people created exquisite sculptures, tools, jewelry, and other objects, which they often buried with their dead in tombs, equipping them for the afterlife. Britain administered Egypt from 1882 to 1936, taking some of its finest antiquities to U.K. museums. Its cities and Nile River banks are among the most densely populated areas in the world.

  11. GEOGRAPHY & TOURISM All but a very small percentage of the population lives along the fertile Nile Valley and Delta; the remainder of the country (more than 90 percent) is desert. The Western Desert is low lying. The Eastern Desert is cut through by wadis (riverbeds that are dry for much of the year). In the southeast the desert gives way to mountains along the Red Sea. The Sinai Peninsula, is another desert region that lies south of Israel and east of the Gulf of Suez. The Suez Canal, an artificial waterway opened in 1869, runs from Port Said to Suez, linking the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. It was built to save European ships from having to sail all the way around Africa to reach the Indian Ocean. Egypt's capital and largest city is Cairo. The climate is hot and dry. SPECIAL FACTS Ancient Egyptian religion lasted more than a thousand years longer than Christianity has lasted up until now.The Nile is the world's longest river. Until the Aswan Dam was completed in 1965, flooding occurred every year.
