Process over results… • I seem to be stuck in a run of “process over results” – that is, organizations that are far more interested in getting the practices and techniques right without understanding what results these techniques are designed to deliver. • Let me give you an example. I was recently working with an established team who had a fairly poor history of delivering working software. Their iteration planning meetings run on-time and with the right people, their standups never go over 14 minutes, their stories are in the classic “as a….I want….so that….” format, and they have retrospectives at the end of each iteration.Yet they constantly fail to deliver software. “The Agile Executive Primer” book • For some time I have been talking with executives of companies – CTO’s CIO’s, Vice Presidents – that are starting their agile adoption, and helping these leaders understand the changes their organization will likely go through. One thing I was asked for time and again was a brief, focused book that explained the agile concepts they must understand, and the organizational issues they need to pay attention to.
Leadership in the Agile Enterprise • Many companies are using an agile approach to software development, greatly improving their quality and value of delivery. However, enabling agility throughout the organization – that is, moving from “doing agile” to “being agile” – takes a different type of management. We call this an adaptive leadership style, where we look at the way we manage the business different, based on speed of delivery, and value delivered.
