The American Community Survey: The Foundation The American Community Survey is on the leading edge of survey design, continuous improvement, and data quality • The nation’s most current, reliable, and accessible data source for local statistics on critical planning topics such as age, children, veterans, commuting, education, income, and employment • Surveys 3.5 million addresses and informs over $675 billion of Federal government spending each year • Covers 35+ topics, supports over 300 evidence-based Federal government uses, and produces 11 billion estimates each year • Three key annual data releases: • 1-year Estimates (for large populations) • 1-year Supplemental Estimates (for small populations) • 5-year Estimates (for very small populations)

  13. About the Economic Census • The U.S. Census Bureau measures the nation’s population once every 10 years. It also measures U.S. businesses every 5 years with the Economic Census • The next Economic Census will be conducted in the second quarter of 2018. Companies report their 2017 year-end numbers • Response is required by law • Responses are confidential. Company data is used for statistical purposes only. The Census Bureau is required by law to keep your information private and secure • Response is required online. This reduces the time needed for completion, improves accuracy, and provides significant cost savings for taxpayers • Results from the Economic Census are free and available to guide business decisions and policy-making

Information Required The Economic Census asks for the following information by location • Employer Identification Number • Physical location • Primary business activity • Sales, receipts, or revenue • Employment and payroll • Industry-specific questions • New data on retail health clinics and on management practices of health care service providers

Economic Census Response • Program launches in May 2018 • Official letters mailed with web address and unique company code to access online survey • Deadline for response is June 12, 2018 • Respondents will be instructed to set up online account on secure website to complete survey • New requirement for Census Bureau economic surveys • Similar to other online accounts with email username, password, security questions • Key changes include • Online response requirement, new reporting instrument for businesses with multiple locations, change in data collection timeframe • Help will be available online and via telephone • Informational website to launch in February

Data from the Economic Census • NAICS: Every 2- thru 6-digit code covered by the Census Bureau • Excludes Agriculture (NAICS 11) and other selected types of business(see https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/economic-census/guidance/understanding-naics.html#par_textimage for full list of exclusions) • Geography: Provides data at the national, state, metro area, county, place, and ZIP Code levels • Other Dimensions: Provides data by business size (estab and firm; employment and revenue), franchisestatus, etc. • Over 200 data variables shown, including “core” variables shown in current programs (establishments, employment, payroll) plus sector-specific variables (inventories, assets, expenses, etc.) • Product Lines data • Very accurate (2012 EC: 84% response rate)

Opportunity Project • President Obama launched the Opportunity Project in March 2016. • Bringing together government, technologists, and communities to create digital tools to solve real world problems. • Tools cover variety of topics including education, employment, veterans, transportation, and many others. • Data sources include LEHD, Dept of Labor, HUD, Bureau Labor Statistics • This year's Sprint kicked off June 25th. It will run through the rest of the year and finish with another Demo Day at Census HQ tentatively scheduled for January 2019. • https://opportunity.census.gov/

  20. What is Statistics in Schools? • It is a free program. • It provides opportunities to teach statistics in Various subjects. • It is designed to support teachers’ existing lesson plans. • The program started in 2000 as Census in Schools. • The program was revised over the last few years.

Why Use Statistics in Schools? • It gives teachers tools to incorporate statistics into any class. • It uses technology to teach statistics. • It can be extended or modified easily. • It matches activities with relevant education standards and guidelines. • It is a free, easy-to-use resource. • It is backed by the U.S. Census Bureau.

  22. Grade Levels and Subjects Classroom activities available for: • Elementary and middle school • Math • Geography • History • High school • Math • History • Geography • Sociology

Key Messages • There is a need for greater statistics knowledge in today’s data-driven economy. • Statistics in Schools introduces statistics beyond math classes. • All Statistics in Schools activities were created by teachers, for teachers. • Statistics in Schools is a product of the U.S. Census Bureau. “It’s becoming increasingly difficult to define who is and is not included in America’s modern STEM – or science, technology, engineering and math – workforce, simply because technical proficiency is becoming mandatory in a diverse body of occupations.” – Andrew Soergel, U.S. News & World Report
