  1. Encounters with Jesus John 1:35-51 Start of many personal stories in John’s Gospel Which ones speak to you? Here are some of the first disciples...

  2. John • Not mentioned? • Surely the other disciple with Andrew? • Reflective person (see his Gospel) • Wants to know about Jesus (‘Where do you live?’) • Come and see / come with me – vital for most people today • Go away, reflect on hospitality, friendliness, openness, and come back for more...

  3. Andrew • Fulfilment of a hope • Tell brother (‘We’ve found the Messiah!’) • Needs someone to make sense of life, history, hopes and fears, joys and disappointments • Meaning in the big questions?

  4. Peter • The one thing John records? • Jesus gives him a nick-name! • Needing valuing? Significance? • Needs a changer of lives • ‘Your life will be different! Follow!’ • You can be someone more than you are • Healed • Set free • Given a new identity

  5. Philip • Just two words • Simple command – ‘Follow me’ • Shy, hesitant maybe? • Perhaps none too bright? • Pointed out the obvious at the feeding of the 5000 – not enough for everyone... • After 3 years of hearing Jesus talk about God, ‘Show us the Father’ • Some people need to opt in to a simple ‘package deal’ from a trusted source • Just trust and follow, that’s absolutely fine

  6. Nathanael • Probably the same as BarTolemaus (Bartholemew) • We know nothing more about him • Just under the fig tree • Classic place for a thinker or dreamer to be • One of the ordinary silent disciples • Yet promised all the glories of heaven and seeing Jesus as the ladder

  7. Cornelius (and his household) Acts 10:35-45 • Foreigner, outsider • Believed in God and wants to know more • Hears God speak and acts on that • Through his bravery inviting Peter, changing the course of human history (glimpsed in the coming of the Magi)

  8. What about you? • Want to come and see and find out more? Like John...? • Want to try to make sense of life? Like Andrew...? • Want to have life changed? Find a new ‘you’? Like Peter...? • Would just like something definite? Not too much to get your head round? Like Philip...? • Just an ordinary person, sometimes you sit and think, sometimes you just sit? Like Nathanael...? • Got a family you are concerned for, and want to find the truth for them? Like Cornelius...?
