Purposes of Pentecost June 10, 2012
Power To Witness • Command from Jesus “Behold I send the promise of my Father upon you, but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.” Luke 24:49 • Master plan for evangelism “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses of me in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8
Power To Witness • Word “power” from Greek “dunamis” forceful explosive impact • Distinction between primary results of the new birth and the Holy Spirit baptism • John 1:12 word “right” from Greek “exousia” meaning authority • Baptism of the Holy Spirit adds power to authority
Power To Witness • Dramatic results “all filled with the Holy Spirit and they spoke the Word of God with boldness” Acts 4:31 “And look, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine” Acts 5:28 “And with great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus” Acts 4:33
Power To Witness • Impact on places they went : • Samaria (Acts 8:8) “And there was great joy in that city” • Antioch (Acts 13:44) “On the nest Sabbath almost the whole city came together to hear the Word of God” • Philippi (Acts 16:20) “These men being Jews, exceedingly trouble our city”
Power To Witness • Impact on places they went: • Thessalonica (Acts 17:6) “Those who have turned the world upside down have come here too” • Ephesus (Eph 19:29) “The whole city was filled with confusion” • Power added to authority (1 Cor 4:20) • “For the Kingdom of God is not in word but in power”
Glorify Christ • “Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit. He poured out this which you now see and hear” Acts 2:33 • Holy Spirit baptism evidence to the disciples that Jesus was now exalted and glorified • Only the glorified Jesus was worthy to give this gift
Gateway To The Supernatural • A taste of the powers of the age to come “…have become partakers of the Holy Spirit and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come.” Heb 6:4-5 • The seal of the Holy Spirit as the guarantee of our inheritance Eph 1:13,14 • A “down payment” that sets us aside as already His purchased property
Gateway To The Supernatural • OT illustration in 2 Kings 5 “So Naaman said, then, if not, please let your servant be given two mule-loads of earth; for your servant will no longer offer either burnt offering or sacrifice to other gods, but to the Lord” 2 Kings 5:17 • NT application “God is Spirit and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth” John 4:24
Gateway To The Supernatural • Life of the early church was permeated in every way by the supernatural • Recorded in every chapter of Acts • God even did unusual miracles through Paul Acts 19:11 • “For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil” 1 John 3:8
Spirit Empowered Prayer • “Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God” Rom 8:26,27
Spirit Empowered Prayer • “praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit…” Eph 6:18 • “pray without ceasing” 1 Thess 5:17 • This is impossible in the natural • “Do not quench the Spirit” 1 Thess 5:19 • OT shadow or type of Holy Spirit (Lev 6:13) “A perpetual fire shall burn on the altar; it shall never go out”
Revelation Of The Scriptures • Holy Spirit will teach you - John 14:26 • “I have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. However, when He, the Spirit of truth has come, He will guide you into all truth…” John 16:12,13 • Had three years under greatest teacher ever and a lot of practicum • Still wasn’t enough • Fulfillment of Christ’s promise to them happened on the Day of Pentecost (Peter’s message)
Revelation Of The Scriptures • Instantaneous understanding of the OT • NT example of Paul • “…Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus who appeared to you on the road as you came, has sent me that you may receive your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” Acts 9:17 • “Immediately he preached the Christ in the synagogues, that He is the Son of God” Acts 9:20 • Scripture in 2 Tim 2:15 still applicable
Continual Guidance • “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God” Rom 8:14 • Necessary for Eph 2:10 to be fulfilled • One of distinguishing marks of NT church was the supernatural leading of the Holy Spirit • “forbidden by the Holy Spirit” Acts 16:6-10 • We must do the right thing at the right time and carry out right purpose at the right time
Life For The Whole Person • “The Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy your soul in drought, and strengthen your bones. You shall be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail” Isaiah 58:11 • Abundant life - John 10:10 • Resurrection power keeps us until our task is done • “Therefore we do not lose heart…” 2 Cor 4:16 • “For I am hard pressed between the two, having a desire to depart and be with Christ…” Phil 1:23
Divine Love Outpoured • “Because God has poured out his love into hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us” Rom 5:5 • The nature of this divine love illustrated in Rom 5:8 “But God demonstrates His own love toward us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us” • Words of Jesus in Luke 23:34 • Words of Stephen in Acts 17:60 • Words of Paul in Rom 9:3 • “Greatest of these is love” 1 Cor 13:13
Personal Application • “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?” Luke 11:13 • We need to ask (implies want) • He is the giver • The Holy Spirit distributes to each seeker as He wills
