The Backyard Brawl had humble beginnings with one of its first games played in Fairmont, W.Va. This game has sparked a rivalry that has spanned the years. The first game played between these two schools happened in 1895. This contest has been highly disputed and very popular since 1943 and has become a huge game (Meyer). The Backyard Brawl has become an emotional game for the players and the fans supporting their local teams.
