  2. What is WHMIS • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System • Provides information about hazardous materials used in the workplace • Workers have the right to receive information about each controlled product they use • Goal of WHMIS is to reduce injury and disease.

  3. HAZARD CLASSES • Class A: Compressed Gas • Class B: Flammable & Combustible • Class C: Oxidizing Material • Class D: Poisonous & Infectious Material

  4. HAZARD CLASSES • Class E: Corrosive Material • Class F: Dangerously Reactive Material

  5. SUPPLIER LABELS Seven items of information must be included on supplier label: • Product identifier • Hazard Symbols • Risk Phrase • Precautionary Statements • First Aid Measures • Supplier Identification • Reference to MSDS

  6. WORKPLACE LABELS Required on containers for each controlled product on site, including secondary containers. Provide 3 types of information: • Product Identifier • Safe Handling and personal protective clothing and equipment. • Reference to MSDs

  8. Workplace labels Workplace labels must be adhered to secondary vessels and include product identification, safe handling instructions and reference to MSDS Solutions that are made and not used immediately should be labeled with safe working instructions and product identification

  9. MSDS SHEET • Material Safety Data Sheet • provides specific hazard information, safe handling information, and emergency procedures for a controlled product. • Key source of information for developing safe working procedures.

  10. MSDS SHEETS Nine Recommended Section Headings: • Product Information • Hazardous Ingredients • Physical Data • Fire and Explosion Hazard • Reactivity Data • Toxicological Properties • Preventative Measures • First Aid Measures • Preparation Information

RESPONSIBLITIES Workers • Know & understand info on labels and MSDS • Handle controlled products safely. • Inform employer if labels missing • Use MSDS to check hazards before using products Employer • Ensure workers understand WHMIS • Provide training • Ensure controlled products have MSDS and WHMIS Labels • MSDS available to workers
