SLOPE STABILIZATION OF US-189 MaQuiGrEngineering Matthew Hakes, Quinton Taylor, Greg Hanks • Problem: • There are two segments of lake-side slopes that have eroded and are now undermining the highway • Construction restraints include: steep slopes and maintaining the flow of traffic • Approach: • Examine possible earth retaining systems for both segments • Evaluate them according to constructability, cost, and design life • Solution: • Design a soil nail retention system that will span over the two segments and prevent further undermining of US-189 • Design requires minimal labor from the slope and is cost effective
