Q:1 What is the I.O.C and its role in the Olympics • Purpose of the I.O.C • I.O.C means International Olympic Committee. The purpose of the IOC is to give the honour to a city to host the Olympics. The organization of the games is held between the IOC and the organizing committee for the Olympic games (OCOG) The Olympic games are the property of the IOC which is the supreme force. It`s role is to look after, support and guide the organization of the games, to make sure that things go well and also make sure that the rules of the Olympic charter are treated well.
Q:2 How are Host Counties chosen for the Olympics? When? • 1) If the city wants to host the Olympics the city must prove to the IOC that it can handle the Olympics (e.g. fitting all the athletes, the tourists, journalists etc.). They have to show that they can host the games in brand new stadiums and house all the people In hotels that are acceptable In quality. They have to transport everyone from one place to the other with a good and reliable mass transit system and the have to show that they can handle high level of security. • 2) then the city must convince its citizens/residents that the expenses of covering the Olympics is worth it for city improvement (e.g. new malls, amusement parks, places to explore, etc.) and new jobs. • 3) last but not least, the city must maintain a strong media system to broadcast the games. Fourth, the effects of hosting the Olympics may not be beneficial if the committees of the bids do not prove great judgement in hosting the Olympics in that specific city. • If the city follows all these steps, it just might be chosen to host the Olympic Games! • Also the host countries are chosen seven years before they start • Bibliography: teacher.scholastic.com
Q:3 What is the financial cost of hosting the Olympics? • Financial cost of the Olympics (Advantages & Disadvantages) Advantages: • 1. Earn money with people going & seeing the Olympics • 2. Countries get to meet each other & have competitive competitions Disadvantages: • Costs a lot of money (at least $1 billion) • 2. Also uses initial budget & taxpayer contribution • 3. Sometimes, cities lose profit
Q:4 How does the host country put the Olympics together? • The athletes stay in a Olympic village made by the host country which is near the Olympic stadium. The village includes shops, various services and a lot of other things that satisfies the athlete's needs . The village is comfortable and safe and protects the athletes from anything happening in the outside world.They start practicing/preparing for the Opening/Closing Ceremony 2-6 years before the Olympics start • bibliography: registration.olympic.org
Q:5 Why do countries want to host the Olympics? • Why do countries want to host the Olympics? • It would help a lot in the cities economy. It could be however the making of buildings could also cost some money for the Olympics which would cost a lot & it would not help the economy at all. It all matters on how the Olympics facilities are formed late after the Games- The Olympic Legacy. The Olympic Legacy is what they are going to do with the money they earn. Like Sochi, Sochi’s Olympic Legacy was to buy fancy toilets. London 2012 Summer Olympics Olympic Legacy was to plan, build, fund & stage the 2012 Summer Olympics & Paralympics games. Countries like to host the Olympic games because it improves the city's transportation systems, the city's employment rates, their economic security & much more. It also helps praising the benefits of the host city, raising the public's interest in future tourism. That future revenue would be generated in travel cost, hotel accommodations, restaurant potranage, taxi fares & tourist attractions other than the venues themselves.
Q:6 How did the first Olympics begin? • How the First Olympics Began! • The first Olympics began in Ancient Greece in 776 BC, they did this for 12 centuries until their emperor Theodosius ordered that any religious things of the Olympics are banned. • Olympia is a site where the Olympics were held, it is in the western side of Peloponnese that according to Greek mythology it is called the island of "Pelops" The center of Olympia was once covered with Zeus's temple (the god of the sky) and Hera (Queen of the gods) • The participants were male Greek citizens. Married women were not allowed to participate in it and not even allowed to watch it. • The ancient Olympics actually a one day event until in 684 BC they were held for three days instead of one, in the fifth century BC they were extended to 5 days. The games were running, long jump, shot put, javelin and boxing. • That's HOW the first Olympics Began!!!
