Exponent A math operation that means repeated multiplication of the same number
Parts of an Exponential Equation 32 = 9 is the same as 3•3 = 9 • Exponent: Tells you how many times to multiply a number (2 in the example above) • Base: The number being multiplied (3 in the example above) • Power: The answer in an exponential problem (9 in the example above)
Today: Roots
Roots are the Inverse of Exponentials • Root: Just like subtraction undoes addition, and division undoes multiplication, roots undo exponents. They are the inverse operation.
Square Roots • Square: An exponent of 2 is called the square because the area of a square is the side length to the power of 2. • Square Root: is the inverse of the square. • The example above shows the square and the square root for a square with side length 7
Rational Numbers Can be written as a fraction of 2 integers
Irrational Numbers Cannot be written as a fraction of 2 integers
