  3. biography • a writer tells the story of another person’s life

  4. autobiography • a writer tells his/her own life story

  5. memoir • a brief autobiographical work in which the author recounts events she/he has witnessed and introduces people she/he has known.

  6. essay • a short non fiction work in which the writer expresses his/her personal view on a particular subject

  7. Types of Essays • narrative essay • an essay that tells a truestory • visual essay • an exploration of a topic that conveys its ideas through visual elements as well as language • persuasive essay • writing that tries to convince readers to do something or accept the writer’s point of view

Types of Essays (cont) • reflective essay • a type of essay in which a writer reflects on his or her own feelings about a topic of personal importance • expository essay • writing that explains a process or presents information • descriptive essay • a writer seeks to convey an impression of a person, place, or object; uses sensory details to create a portrait with words. • humorous essay • Seeks to entertain, but may have a serious message as well.
