Butterflies lay their eggs on the leaves of plants and trees.
After about 10 days, the eggs hatch and the caterpillars emerge and eat the leaves to grow.
When they grow, they are ready for the transformation.
The caterpillars begin to form the cocoon/pupa and change inside it.
After about 3 weeks, the pupas open and the caterpillars are now butterflies.
Most butterflies live for about 4 or 5 months. During this time, they lay more eggs.
