Table work • Working in groups reading the associated pages and be ready to explain: • Energy Flows (page 115 including diagram) – Group 1 • Energy is converted to Biomass – Group 2 (pg. 116) • Impact of Phosphorous & Nitrogen in water systems. Group 3 (pages 117-118)
New Material • Abiotic vs. Biotic. • Energy is converted to Biomass • Energy Flows
Boards - modified • Ecological Services – Back row (explain the slide), all others be prepared to be called on.
Net primary productivity of ecosystems Productivity = rate at which ecosystems generate biomass. High net primary productivity = ecosystems whose plants rapidly convert solar energy to biomass
Groundwater Aquifers = underground reservoirs of sponge-like regions of rock and soil that hold… Groundwater = water found underground beneath layers of soil Water table = the upper limit of groundwater in an aquifer Water may be ancient (thousands of years old) Groundwater becomes exposed to the air where the water table reaches the surface Exposed water runs off to the ocean or evaporates
Boards Carbon Cycle and how we are negatively impacting it.
Boards Nitrogen Cycle and the impact on the oceans. Also, what is nitrogen fixing & the Haber-Bosch Process
Boards Nitrogen Cycle and the impact on the oceans. Also, what is nitrogen fixing & the Haber-Bosch Process Incase it is not explained well: • Haber-Bosch process = production of fertilizers by combining nitrogen and hydrogen to synthesize ammonia. Prior to this, to achieve the same effect farmers had to dump a lot of fertilizer to some of the nitrogen to activate within the soil. • Humans overcame the limits on crop productivity
Boards Phosphorus Cycle – impact on fresh water ways
Boards - modified • Landscape ecology = studies how landscape structure affects the abundance, distribution, and interaction of organisms • Patches= form the landscape
