Masters in Clinical Research RR-03-007, “Clinical Research Education and Career Development (CRECD) in Minority Institutions.” Principal Investigator - Rosanne Harrigan, EdD, MS, APRN-Rx, FAAN Co-Principal Investigator - David Easa, MD, Professor of Pediatrics and Obstetrics and Associate Dean for Clinical Research

  2. Introduction This program will provide high quality training for doctoral and postdoctoral candidates in order to enrich the body of clinical researchers, including minority investigators, at UH.

  3. Goals • To offer knowledge and skills needed to pursue careers in clinical research • To function as a supportive mechanism for newly trained investigators • To actively facilitate career development • To encourage research collaborations, particularly those related to health disparities research • To produce well-educated clinical researchers capable of implementing clinical research studies • To increase the number and quality of successful clinical investigators, particularly those conducting research designed to reduce and eliminate health disparities among Hawai`i’s diverse ethnic population.

Benefits for Trainees • Salary • Tuition and Books • They will acquire skills in epidemiology and biostatistics • They will master the scientific principles that underlie clinical research methods • They will develop the ability to identify and resolve ethical issues involved in clinical research • They will ensure the safeguarding of human subjects • They will understand Institutional Review Boards and other relevant requirements • They will gain increased capacity to seek and obtain NIH and other extramural funding for conducting clinical research • The part-time curriculum can be completed in two years and is competency based

  5. Aspects of the Curriculum • Didactic and problem-based modules • A Mentored research project • A Seminar series

Some Sources of Participants • Trainees from diverse disciplines to broaden their perspectives as well as increase opportunities for innovative, cross-disciplinary collaborations in clinical research • The John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) • The Cancer Research Center of Hawai`i (CRCH) • The School of Social Work • The School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene (SONDH) • The Pacific Biomedical Research Center (PBRC)

  7. Eligible Participants • Medical students • Residents and fellows • Post-doctoral fellows • PhD candidates • Junior faculty • Faculty members who have successfully competed for career development awards from the NIH and other grantors

  8. Intentions • To offer an accredited training program that will emphasize epidemiological, methodological, cultural, and ethical issues inherent to clinical research • To improve the quantity and quality of research in the state. • To refine and implement a rigorous clinical research curriculum • To solidify the administrative structure needed to support MSCR activities • To foster career development of trainees • To help ensure their success as leading investigators in their chosen research fields
