Indicator cocks Jacket Cooling Water
Warming ThroughMain engines have to be warmed through slowly after they have been shut down. The jacket water systemtemperature to be raised to as near to the operating temperature as possible. The time taken to warm the engine depends on how hot the temperature of the system was before starting. Circulation should not start less than 12 hours before the estimated time of departure. Other systems are to be put on line during this time too, such as; Lubricating oil systems. Fuel circulating systems.
Standby to Departure On vessels where the engine is directly coupled to the propeller, you need to contact the bridge and request permission to turn the engine. After that, all the indicator cocks are to be opened. The engine is then to be turned at least one revolution with the turning gear . During this time the indicator cocks are sighted for any evidence of oil or water discharge. If this test is satisfactory, then the indicator cocks are to be shut and the turning gear disengaged. It is very important that the disengagement of the turning gear is checked.
Next, you need to ask for permission from the bridge to turn the engine on air. First , all indicator cocks are to be opened. The engine is to be "kicked" ahead and astern on starting air. The indicator cocks are then to be closed.Following the satisfactory turning of the engine on air, the bridge is to be contacted and permission to turn the engine on fuel requested. After permission is received the engine isturned on fuel. The engine is to be turned dead slow ahead and astern on fuel.
Preparations for standby1. The engine must be warmed by circulating hot water through the jackets. 2. The supply tanks, filters, valves and drains are all to be checked.3. The lubricating oil pumps and circulating water pumps are started and all the sight glasses observed.4. All control equipment and alarms are checked5. The indicator cocks are opened, the turning gear engaged and the engine turned through 2/3 revolutions so that if there is water in the cylinders it will be forced out.6. The fuel oil system is checked and circulated with hot oil.7. The turning gear is removed and the engine is turned over on air before closing the indicator cocks.8. The engine is now prepared for standby.
