How to encourage Industry to Commercialise Veterinary Medicinal Products in Africa ? • Introduction • Real African Animal Production REVOLUTION • Farmers MENTALITY and EDUCATION are changing very fast • From «quantity farming» to Sustainable QUALITY FARMING => High Quality Animal Products => Export Opportunities Results in HIGH ADDED VALUE • Need for HIGH QUALITY VETERINARY DRUGS • This is very encouraging for the Veterinary Pharmaceutical Industry
How to encourage Industry to Commercialise Veterinary Medicinal Products in Africa ? • Actual Situation for Veterinary Medicinal Products in Africa • Overcrowded withfakeand low quality “generics” • Senegal: 140 registered Veterinary products but more than 1000 marketed • Difficulties for Farmers to haveaccess to Quality Drugs • Products with same Active Ingredient are ALL sold at more or less the same price to farmers => strong interest to promote only low quality “generic” products => Very High Margins => MONEY-MAKERS

(2007): Study of the Distribution and Quality of Veterinary Drugs in Senegal • Material and Methods • Market survey of different therapeutical groups of veterinary drugs collected in different regions in Cameroon and Senegal were analysed by LACOMEV, Senegal (Control Laboratory for Veterinary Drugs). • Drugs were obtained as well as from the official markets (legal) as from the unregulated open markets (parallel markets) • Tolerance limit ±10%
