Iranian Timeline 1826-1828: Russia forces Iran to accept the Treaty of Turkomanchai 1848-1896: During the reign of Nasir al-Din Shah, British and Russian merchants seek access to Iran's economy. 1863: The shah allows a British company to build the telegraph system in Iran 1890: The shah gives a British company the exclusive right to produce, sell, and export tobacco. 1905: Constitutional Revolution 1907:Introduction of constitution which limits the absolutist powers of rulers.1911:British troops land in the south and Russian troops push into the north. 1914-1918: Iran remains neutral in World War I. Nevertheless, the war has a devastating impact on Iran. 1919: Following the war the Treaty of Versailles makes Iran a mandate creating spheres of influence for both Britain and Russia 1925: Reza Khan overthrows the Qajar Shan to become Reza Shah Pahlavi 1941: During WWII Germany and Russia invade Iran

The Coup of 1953 • In 1951 the government of nationalist Prime Minister Mohammed Mossadeg nationalized the British owned Iranian Oil Company • August of 1953- The US and the UK engineered a coup against the democratically elected Mossadegh • This incident is often referenced by Iranians to indicate their dislike and distrust of Americans. Mosaddeq is viewed as a victim of “imperialist greed for Iran’s oil”.
