Description • DESCRIPTION: A large green, brown, or olive frog, 2 1/2 to 4 inches long. Some have blotchy markings on the back and/or sides. Has a fold of skin from eardrum down each side of back; the similar appearing, but larger, Bullfrog lacks these folds. Undersides are white, sometimes dappled with gray. Throat is yellow in the male, white in the female. Upper lip area is green or yellow
Biotic Potential • Lifespan: the lifetime of a wild green frog is unknown but captive frogs can live up to 10 years. • A single frog can lay up to 100 eggs at once. • Depending on the climate, and where the frog lives it may only reproduce once a year
Habitat • Permanent ponds, lakes, marshes, wooded swamps, banks of streams. Eats insects, smaller frogs, and other small prey.
Where are They Found? • The Green Frogs range in Kansas is the eastern most tier of counties south from the Marais des Cygnes River Basin. The only currently known populations occur in the Spring River Basin in Cherokee County Kansas.
Diet • The Green frog Eats insects, smaller frogs, and other small prey. • There are a wide variety of frog predators. Animals that eat frogs for snacks include snakes, lizards, birds, and various small animals like hedgehogs.
Endangered • The main reason for the endangerment of the green frog is because it doesn’t have a high biotic potential.
