  1. Canada-France-Hawaii TelescopeObservatory Automation Project: Audio and Video Management Project by: Amber Imai Mentors: Tom Vermeulen & Bill CruiseAdvisor: Sarah Gajadhar Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Home Institution: University of Hawaii at Manoa University of California Santa Cruz, Center for Adaptive Optics (CfAO) Akamai Internship Program, Summer 2008

  2. Overview • OAP Design/Objective • My Role in the OAP • Work in Progress • Concluding Statements

  3. OAP Objective(adapted from the OAP Detailed Design, Audio and Video) • Technical Advances and Observatory Efficiency • No One at Summit • Easier Work Environment • Mechanical Failure • Solution: • Need to monitor and remotely control observatory systems • Can be done through sensors, programmable logic controllers, and WEBCAMS

  4. What is in Progress for the OAP • Software Infrastructure • Remote Control of Mirror Cover and Cooling Systems, Telescope Control System, and Dome Shutter (to name a few) • AUDIO and VIDEO MONITORING

  5. My Role in the Project • Creating the Audio Video Recording Server • Learn and Understand Linked Lists, Pointers, Arrays, Strings, and Forked Processes • Learn about Axis webcams • Axis 214 • Axis 207

  6. AV Server Flowchart

  7. Real Time Video

  8. Time Lapse Video

  9. Work in Progress • Addition of more cameras • Updating the camera webpage • Other sections of the OAP • Fully Remote Observing

  10. Concluding Statements • The OAP now has a specially designed server that will record and manage it’s space • Store data for approximately 1 week • AV Server COMPLETE!

  11. Acknowledgements • Tom Vermeulen • Bill Cruise • Sarah Gajadhar • CFHT staff • Akamai Internship Program Staff The Akamai Internship Program is funded by the Center for Adaptive Optics through its National Science Foundation Science and Technology Center grant (#AST-987683) Background by: Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope/2003 from the MegaPrime, Messier 35 & NGC 2158 Star Clusters
