What is a High Performance Processor? • Processor subtype utilized for specific systems that require rapid computations and fast input and output speeds. • Usually found in supercomputers, high-capacity servers and mainframes. • Typically based on RISC architectures.
Technological Advances • AMD Opteron: • Integrated Memory Controller • HyperTransport Technology • IBM PowerPC 970FX: • Power4 Technology

Conclusion • Based on the data gathered, the IBM PowerPC 970FX, the Intel Itanium 2 and the AMD Opteron are better all-around for both server and mainframe applications. • AMD Opteron and IBM PowerPC 970FX are compatible with 32-bit and 64-bit systems and applications.
