The history behind of the Great Wall of China Build more than 2000 years ago, the Great Wall of China is considered to be one of the largest construction projects that have been completed till now. It was built by the first emperor Qin Shi Huangdi of China.
Rammed earth was used initially to build the walls and it was constructed by peasants who were forcible recruited for the purpose, soldiers, war prisoners and convicts. Apart from the Qin dynasty the other dynasty that were involved in expanding the Great Wall of China are the Sui, the Ming and the Northern Qi. They re-manned, rebuilt and expanded the wall. However they followed routs which were different from the one that was followed by Qin.
Some of the sections of the Great Wall have been destroyed due to various reasons like the building material used was of inferior quality and also due to reasons such as demolition of the walls by human and also natural calamity. Nearly 4 lakhs people were recorded to have died during the construction of the wall. UNESCO declared the wall as a World Heritage site in the year 1987. Though the official length has been claimed to be 5500 miles.
The best time to visit the Great Wall depends on which pass you are willing to explore. For places around Great Wall of Beijing the best time is spring or autumn, for jiayu pass it’s May to October and Shanhai pass its summer and autumn. The wall of China has always been a famous destination for the tourist and more so now because of the various types of tours that are being organized by travel agents.
