  1. History Is More Then Dates, BUT, Some Dates are Important to Know. There have been some important years in U.S. and world history. The study of these key years can help us understand the entire 20th Century 1919 1932 1948 1968 1980

  2. 1919 • Treaty of Versailles signed after two years of negotiation between WWI victors. Germany declared “Wholly Responsible” for the war • The Black Sox Scandal “fixes” World Series • Supreme Court Ruling on “Freedom to publish” validates jailing of anyone who publishes anti-government pamphlets • Volsted Act Legalizes Prohibition • The Red Scare • Violent Labor Wars and Strikes Hit U.S.

  3. 1932 • The Depressions hits it lowest point • FDR elected and launches The New Deal • Hitler Granted Germany Citizenship • Stalin launches “Culture Wars” in USSR • Conservative Americans vilify FDR’s “Socialist Takeover of Government” • Japan Invades China • The Lindberg Baby becomes media circus • Al Capone Goes To Jail

  4. 1948 • First Post-War election with FOUR legitimate parties…(Dewey Defeats Truman) • Marshall Plan and Berlin Airlift after USSR cuts off all rail traffic to Berlin • Jewish provisional government formed as British Mandate for Palestine end • Nikita Krushchev becomes the new leader of the Soviet Union • George Orwell publishes “1984” • The last British troops leave India • “Uncle Milty” Premieres on TV • President Truman officially integrates US Military

  5. 1968 • Assassination of RFK and MLK • US cities erupt in racial riots • Democratic Convention and “Police Riots” in Chicago • Tet offensive • Czechoslovakia invaded by USSR after “reforms” • The worlds first heart transplant • Intel incorporates • Beatle's animated film "Yellow Submarine" premiers • Men Orbit the Moon for the first time, on Christmas Eve

  6. 1980 • President Carter announces US boycott of Moscow Olympics due to USSR occupation of Afghanistan • Ronald Reagan elected President and John Lennon assassinated 5 weeks apart • US Hostages still held in Iran, Shah dies in Egypt • Iraq-Iran War Begins • Mt St Helens erupts • Solidarity labor union forms in Poland

  7. Events of One Year Can Affect An Entire Generation We will be studying not only the events of specific years, but what led up to them and subsequent events. Our goal is to learn that nothing happens in a vacuum and historical cause and effect are not linked together as well as they should be Every time you learn something, it should open your mind to new information. The more you know, the more there is to learn Our REAL goal then is to discover how many seemingly different events can be tied together
