What is the world health organization • WHO is an organization that focuses on Public Health • WHO main headquarters are located in Geneva Switzerland • WHO is a member of the United Nations Development Group • The Health Organization, its predecessor, was an agency of the League of Nations • Its goal is to provide information and advice on the field of human health.

  3. How was WHO established? • The countries of the UN have agreed to form a separate group, concerning on World Health. • The UN Econimic and Social Council called an international conference to consider the establishment of WHO. • WHO finally came to light in April 7, 1948.

  4. What Countries are in this organization? • There are currently 194 states involved in WHO including: • Afghanistan -France -Kenya • Belgium - Germany -Libya • China - Haiti -Mexico • Denmark -India -Oman • Egypt -Japan -Pakistan

  5. Countries (Continued) • - Qatar -Yemen • - Romania -Zambia • - Saudi Arabia • - Thailand • - United States of America • - Vietnam

  6. Canada’s contribution and involvement • Canada has contributed $100 000 000 for treatment for 3 000 000 people with AIDS in 2005. • Canada was the Third Member State on August 27, 1946. • Dr. Brock Chisholm, a Canada Deputy Minister of Health, became WHO’s first Director General. • In terms of WHO’s programs, (e.g. International Agency on Cancer) Canada supports increasing involvement in these projects.

  7. WHO Achievements • In 1967, 31 countries were infected with smallpox. In a single year, between 10 to 15 million people were affected; two million of these people died. If not for the eradication, at least 20 million people may have died.

  8. Achievements (Continued) • In 1965, 50 million people were victims of Yaws, a disfiguring disease. Because this issue came to WHO’s attention, 46 million people were cured in 49 countries.

  9. Conclusion • WHO helps provide information on health problems and diseases. • WHO has proven to be a very successful group, as they have cured many countries in the past from diseases.
