  2. RUTH: Protagonist • Lives in Milwaukee • 12 years old • 1969 – height of Civil Rights Movement • Suspended for carrying her father’s knife in her school backpack • Worried about violence in her neighborhood • Admires Golda Meir

  3. GOLDIE: Protagonist • Lived in Milwaukee • 1910 – After family immigrated from Russia • Begins local campaign: One Child, One Book • Wants to go to school and not get married • Later works for Zionist League to establish Palestine / Israel as Jewish homeland

GOLDIE’S FAMILY Father – Moshe: Goes to Denver after Goldie runs away; promises to let her get education and go to college Mother – Bluma: Conflicts with Goldie; wants her to get married and not be a teacher; wants Goldie to work in the store; believes “willfulness is dangerous” Sister – Sheyna: Older; worked in cigarette factory until got sick; lives in Denver; writes to Goldie and encourages her to get education; Goldie’s role model; Goldie runs away to stay with Sheyna and work on the Zionist League Sister – Tzipka: Younger; lives at home; wants to change her name so it’s easier to say

RUTH’S FAMILY Father – Moved to Milwaukee; tried working at mill as “scab”; mill workers burned it down; moved back to Alabama w/o family; died at age 39; mysterious circumstances; mom says “ear infection” Mother – Florence: Moved from Alabama ; stayed in Milwaukee; found work; had to live in 615 neighborhood for blacks; gets fired when Ruth forgets to pick up little cousin and Aunt Yolanda calls Florence at work; gets job back, but works weekends w/ no pay Brother – Cliff: Older; killed; was a Commando during Sixteenth St. Bridge incident ; “watches over” Ruth as a ghost; encourages her

SETTINGS Alternate between 1969 (Ruth’s era) and 1910 (Goldie’s era) 1969 – Ruth’s teacher, Mr. Baker, stops at her home toencourage her to return to school 1910 – Goldie’s home with friend, Regina, and little sister, Tzipka. Planning her “One Child, One Book” campaign. Goldie argues with her mom, Bluma,about working in the store. 1969 – Cliff’s spirit talks to Ruth who doesn’t understand, thinkingit’s a bad dream. Mother comforts her, “Cliff ain’t here, baby… He’s gone…” 1910 – Goldie and sister give presentation for book campaign. 1969 – Ruth realizes she caused her mom and aunt to be fired because she forgot to pick up cousin Tyrone for babysitting. Mr. Baker stops to give her a book about Golda Meir (Goldie as an adult). Goldie and her family act out the biography as Ruthreads…
