ANALYSING NEEDS • Definitions of needs analysis • Hypothetical Scenarios • Needs analysis as a course design process • Building an existing knowledge • Type of information to collect
Definitions of needs analysis Chamber (1980) Need analysis should be concerned with the establishment of communicative needs and their realisations, resulting from an analysis of the communication in the target situation-what I will refer to as target situation analysis.
Hypothetical Scenarios In this section number of hypothetical scenarios are presented. Each shows an ESP course that set out to address language needs but despite all good intensions failed to do so in some respects.
Needs analysis as a course design process The above scenarios show how important it is to explore and consider needs before setting up a course of instruction.
Building an existing knowledge • It has been suggested in the previous sections of this chapter that teachers course developers needs to carefully investigate needs when setting up or refining ESP courses.
Type of information to collect • In needs analysis the quality of the data collected depends in large part on selecting appropriate data collection techniques. Unless the course developers or teachers conducting the needs analysis have large quantities of time to devote to the project, they will need to be selective about what type of data to collect.
