  1. Muons µ By John and Nicole ~Waterloo

  2. Definition of a Muon • Muon- an elementary particle with a mass about 200 times that of an electron. It is a lepton (quark) with a negative charge and has a half-life of two-millionths of a second.

  3. Characteristics • Mass~ 0.106GeV/c² • Charge~ negative • Life-time~ 0.000002 sec.

  4. Discovery • In 1961, Leon Max Lederman, Melvin Schwartz, and Jack Steinberger made the discovery of muons as a result of an experiment with a high-energy neutrino beam.

  5. How a muon decays p=0.7518 ± 0.0026 η= -0.007± 0.013 δ= 0.749 ± 0.004 εΡμ= 1.003 ± 0.008(c0 εΡμδ/ρ 0.99682, CL = 90% (c) ε’ = 1.00 ± 0.04 ε”= 0.7 ±0.4 a/A = (0± 4) x 10-³ a’/A = (0± 4) x 10-³ β/A = (4 ± 6) x 10-³ β’/A = (2 ± 6) x 10-³ ή = 0.02 ± 0.08 Almost all the time it ends as an electron e¯VeVμ

  6. Conclusion • Definition of a muon • Characteristics of a muon • The Discovery • How a muon decays
