Ghana. Ghana. The Republic of Ghana is a country located in West Africa. The word Ghana means "Warrior King" and is derived from the ancient Ghana Empire. The capital, Accra, it has the same time as the UK (except when we change the clock).

Ghana • The Republic of Ghana is a country located in West Africa. The word Ghana means "Warrior King" and is derived from the ancient Ghana Empire. • The capital, Accra, it has the same time as the UK (except when we change the clock). • The country has a total land area of 238,533 sq. km and a population of 23,837,000 million (estimate 2010). • The land is relatively flat with more than half of the country below 200m. • The Volta River basin dominates the country’s river system and includes the Lake Volta (the largest artificial lake in the world). • Ghana was a former British colony, known as the Gold Coast. • It gained independence on the 6th March 1957
THE FLAG OF GHANA • RED represents the blood of those who died in the country's struggle for independence. • GOLD represents the mineral wealth of the country. • GREEN symbolizes the country's rich forests. • THE BLACK STAR stands for the lodestar of African Freedom.
The Educational System in Ghana • Children in Ghana begin two years of kindergarten at age four. • Then all children ages 6-12 attend six years of elementary education. • If families can afford it, children go on to secondary education. • Ghana’s school system is more advanced than many of its African neighbors.
The People and their Culture • There are over 50 different ethnic groups in Ghana, each with their own customs and languages. • But the country is harmonious and peaceful. The Akan tribe is the largest group and makes up about 45 percent of the population. • They live mostly in villages and grow their food on farms.
The People and their Culture • The traditional cloth of the Ghanaian people is the bright and colorful kente cloth. • In the north, the men wear loose flowing clothes made of darker cloth.
The People and their Culture Ghanaians love soccer and built a large soccer stadium in the capital of Accra. Soccer is the national sport of Ghana.
The People and their Culture Kofi Annan is one of the most well-known Ghanaians. He served as secretary-general of the United Nations from 1997- 2006.
GOVERNMENT OF GHANA • The President is the head of government and the head of state in Ghana. • The President and Vice President are elected every four years. • A council of ministers is selected by the President and approved by the Parliament. • The ministers are made of heads of different departments of state in the government. • There is also a system of tribal government in addition to the national government.
Currency in Ghana • The cedi is the unit of currency (money) in Ghana • The word cedi (dollar) is derived from the Akan word cowry shell which were once used as a form of currency. • One Ghana cedi is divided into one hundred pesewas (pennies). • 1 US dollar is equal to 22,198.9 Ghana cedi
