  3. AdelinaSotnikova is a Russian figure skater. • She is the 2014 Olympic figure skating champion. • She is the first Russian to win this Olympic gold.

  4. Adelina is also a two-time European silver medalist (2013–2014), a five-time medalist on the Grand Prix series, and a four-time Russian national champion (2009, 2011–2012, 2014). • On the junior level, she is the 2011 World Junior champion and and 2012 Youth Olympics silver medalist. 

  5. Career • AdelinaSotnikova began skating at the age of four at the Yuzhny Ice Rink  near her home in Moscow. • Sotnikova debuted at the senior level at the 2009 Russian Nationals and won the gold medal at the age of 12!One month later she also won the 2009 Russian Junior Championships.  • Sotnikova was ineligible to compete on the Junior Grand Prix circuit during the 2009–2010 season because skating rules require that skaters turn 13 before 1 July in their place of birth – she was born a few hours into 1 July in Moscow. • Adelina struggled when she went through a growth spurt and dropped in the rankings.

  6. Youth • AdelinaSotnikova began skating at the age of four at the Yuzhny Ice Rink  near her home in Moscow. • Sotnikova attended a high school where athletes form about half the student body.

  7. Disappointment and triumph • Sotnikova was disappointed not to be selected to participate in the 2014 Winter Olmypics figure skating team event.  • After winning the gold medal in the ladies' individual event Sotnikova stated that she became "more motivated to win the singles competition" after she was not chosen to compete in the earlier team competition.

  8. Olympic Gold • Adelina won the Olympic gold with an overall score of 224.59 points, 5.48 points ahead of silver medallist Kim Yuna and 7.86 points ahead of bronze medallist Carolina Kostner. • Sotnikova trailed Kim by .28 points after the short program but overtook her by winning the free skate.

  9. Controversy • Adelina’s victory caused controversy as many claimed that the scoring in the final was biased towards the Russian competitor. • Adelina scored high on the technical elements of her routine, performing seven triple jumps in the final.
