STATISTICS Ashley Johnson LTEC 4100 Section 6 February 4th 2009
UNIT QUESTION • What is the definition of Mean • What is the definition of Median • What is the definition of Mode
ESSENTIAL QUESTION • Can you determine which “M” to use in different situations?
MEAN • The mean is the average of a group of numbers. • The mean of the numbers: 1, 4, 2, and 5 is 3 • First step: add all of the numbers. 1+4+2+5=12 • Second step: divide the total by the amount of numbers (4). 12/4=3
MEDIAN • The median is the middle number of a group of numbers • The median of the numbers: 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 is 5. • If there is an even amount of numbers: 2, 4, 6 and 8, you add the two middle numbers and divide by 2. The median: 4+6=10, divided by 2 is 5.
MODE • The mode is the number that occurs the most in a group of numbers. • The mode of the numbers:1, 1, 2, 1, 2, 2, 3, 1 is 1. There are four 1’s, three 2’s and one 3. There are more 1’s than any other number.
FROM THE TEKS (7.12) • Probability and statistics. • The student is expected to: • Describe a set of data using mean, median, mode. • Choose among mean, median, mode to describe a set of data and justify the choice for a particular situation.
