Major Accomplishments: Wall Info Photos Messages Events Friends 1872 - Founded school for deaf-mutes in Boston which later became part of Boston University. Won Volta Prize in 1880; Took money from prize to create Volta company and created the Volta phone which could transmit sound through light. National Geographic Society President 1896-1904 1907 Created a kite that could carry a person. Also created the aileron and tricycle landing gear. In 1877 he formed the Bell Telephone Company. This company later merged with Western Electric Co. Later the American Telephone and Telegraph company was formed. (AT&T)

His final full-sized "hydrodrome," developed in 1917, reached speeds in excess of 113 km/h (70 mph) and for many years was the fastest boat in the world.
