Prayer: Moving from the Defensive to the Offensive Luke 11.14-26
“Stewardship is the act of organizing your life so that God can spend you.” Lynn A. Miller, author
For if you possess these (character) qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Peter 1.8
Opposition tries to put Jesus on the defensive by . . . • Questioning His identity • Lying about the miracle • Undermining His authority • Dismissing His ministry • Diverting attention away from God’s work
Teach me your way, O LORD, and I will walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name. Psalm 86.11
How did Jesus go on the offensive? • Rejected their assumptions • Exposed their faulty thinking • Confronted them with the presence of the Kingdom of God • Explained the dynamics of Spiritual Warfare
Satan is Limited • Satan is limited in authority • Satan is limited in knowledge • Satan is limited in power • Satan is limited in presence
According to vss.22-23Satan . . . • attacks • overpowers • divides • scatters . . . the person who relies on his power and possessions.
Plan the Offensive • Leaves no time to mourn over the past • Refocuses our energies for today and tomorrow • Confronts depression and discouragement before they can take root
Planning the Offensive • Breaks the cycle of negative thinking • Dismantles the enemy’s traps before they can be laid • Paves the way for God’s kingdom work
Implementing Offensive Prayer • Prayer sweeps your house clean vs.25 First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean. Matthew 23.26 Receive forgiveness, offer forgiveness
Implementing Offensive Prayer • Prayer puts life in order vs.25 “they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind.” Mark 5.15 Prayer slows us down to Jesus’ pace of life.
Implementing Offensive Prayer • Prayer fills the emptiness with the Holy Spirit “ . . . the evil spirit finds the house unoccupied.” Matthew 12.43 “ . . . be filled with the Spirit.” Ephesians 5.18
And pray in the Spirit • on all occasions • with all kinds of prayers and requests. • with this in mind • be alert • and always keep on praying for all the saints. Ephesians 6.18
