What is Text? • Where cowboys live. • Something teachers give kids. • A shot • I don’t know, does it taste good? You must define it before your students can learn how to apply it.
Where Can We Find Text? • Owner’s manuals-Legos Directions • Closed captioned television-mute button • Clothes labels • On toys (MADE IN CHINA!) • In the elevator-helping to push buttons Why are these examples important for our young learners vs. mentor texts as we begin the unit?
How Can We Find Time For A Text Unit? • Part of calendar time • Mentor texts can be from your ELA materials • Write in subject areas- reports, journals, reflections, pen pals. • Directly tied to the CORE Standards If we do not give our students the instruction and opportunities to explore the power of the written words how can we expect them to value their writing?
Framework of a Text Unit • Mini-lessons based on topics you want your students to focus on. • Mentor texts that illustrate those topics • Time to write daily, or at least every other day. • Conferencing with students based on need. Fair is not equal. • Writing partners grouped heterogeneously.
How To Use Mentor Texts • What mini-lesson text focus could you get from the books in front of you? EXPLORE! • How will you remind your students about the focus/ideas from the mentor texts? • Is it acceptable in your classroom to “copy” mentor text illustrations or words? • Conferencing points
Write Your Own Text Unit! • Every unit should begin with defining what your focus will be. • Every unit should end with a writer’s celebration. • The length of the unit is up to you. • MATT GLOVER OUTLINE is just a suggestion.
