KOHLBERG -- criticisms • Stages too hierarchical and sequential • Cognitive vs affective aspects of moral reasoning • Adult stages may ignore cultural issues • Bias toward males (Gilligan)
Why do we care about social and moral development in school? • Schools are communities • Communities have standards • Certain acts are tolerated – others are not • Aggression (physical/verbal; violent/not violent) • Bullying • Cheating
